On Wednesday, 22 July, two amazing Brisbane personalities will host a stunning new event to raise 31,000 pairs of pyjamas for Australian foster children – the PYJAMA TEA PARTY.

The Pyjama Tea Party was the brainchild of Leisa Gill of Pandemonium café at Paddington and Tara Castle of Pampered.com.au. After the success of collecting and shipping thousands of stuffed toys for overseas orphans, Leisa and Tara wanted to embrace a project focused on Australian children.

“Leisa and I somehow developed a talent of collecting and when we read the figures of Australian foster children we knew we had to assist in some way, Tara said. “I was astounded to hear we have over 31,500 foster children in Australia, of which 92% are below the average reading level at age 7 and 75% don’t finish school. The Pyjama Foundation assists these children through literacy programs and I thought maybe we could help just a little by providing new pyjamas for those children that often have nothing.”

Leisa and Tara’s determination created the Pyjama Project and the campaign began to raise 31,000 pairs of children’s pyjamas. To celebrate the project and encourage Brisbane to get involved the pair decided to host the Pyjama Tea Party. Tickets do not have a monetary value on them, instead guests are asked to bring 2 pairs of new children’s pyjamas to donate.

The event has already attracted huge support from a number of high profile businesses, including MYER (who will showcase a pyjama fashion parade on the day), MIRRA, and Peter Alexander. The morning celebration will include champagne, DiBella coffee, Pyjama Foundation celebrity ambassador attendance, and the divine MC, Ms Dominique Rizzo who is also assisting with catering on the day.

Tara says she and Leisa have been overwhelmed with support and are thrilled the Pyjama Project has already been embraced by others.

“In these times it is hard for people to donate money as it is a precious commodity and you always want it to go to a worthwhile cause. I think people find it much easier to donate tangible items and this is why we are already swimming in pyjamas! But we have a huge target to meet and we are determined more than ever to get there.”
